SETH: Hey.

KIMBERLY: Hey.

SETH (He puts books away for a while): So, are you like … mad at me?

KIMBERLY: No.

SETH: Oh. Because I noticed you changed chairs when I sat down in Spanish.

KIMBERLY: It was just cold by the window.

SETH: Oh, okay.

(Beat.)

I wish you had told me it was your birthday. I would’ve gotten you something.

KIMBERLY: You don’t need to get me anything.

SETH: Sixteen, right?

KIMBERLY: Yup.

SETH: Cool.

(Beat.)

You know, my dad doesn’t remember birthdays either. That was kinda my mom’s job. He doesn’t really pay attention to dates anymore. He doesn’t really pay attention to anything, actually.

(An awkward chuckle, then) Are you sure you’re not mad?

KIMBERLY: I’m sure. I just … That stuff with my dad was kinda humiliating.

SETH: He was just doing his job. Telling me to not kiss you and / stuff?

KIMBERLY: Yeah, we don’t really need to talk about it.

SETH: Okay, yeah, that makes sense.

(Pause.)

I was thinking though—um, if you wanted me to, I’d do it anyway.

(Beat.)
